Tuesday Tips – Identity theft protection

“Mailboxing” or “redflagging” is a criminal activity in which thieves target residential mailboxes with outgoing mail and the red flag up in the hopes of finding checks. Even though the checks may be made out to the utility company, business, or a loved one, the thieves can “wash” the checks in a chemical such as acetone to dissolve the ink, and then make the checks out to themselves for whatever amount they desire.

Instead, consider sending electronic gift certificates for gifts to loved ones and pay your bills online. Most banks offer online bill paying these days and for the businesses that do require a paper check, some banks can even generate a check that does not reveal your personal account number. Contact your bank for more details.
