Tuesday Tips: Safe Place for Your Valuables

How many secret hiding places do you have in your house?

You know, the hidden locations where you hide your valuables thinking that no one will ever find them.  Places like the shelf in the top of the closet, the underwear drawer of your dresser, a cereal box or flour container in your kitchen.

Many people lure themselves into thinking that the secret hiding places they choose for their prized possessions won’t be found by criminals.  Unfortunately, thieves leave no stone unturned or drawer unopened when they burglarize a house.

For a case in point take the two teenagers who formed the Bling Ring in southern California, Rachel Lee and Nick Prugo.  Before they started their year-long crime spree, they got their feet wet by burglarizing the house of a friend who was out of town.  Even though they were complete amateurs, who had never broken into a home before, they made off with $8,000 in cash that they found in perhaps the worst of all secret hiding places… under the bed!

So, to help protect your important documents and treasured items, we recommend using the following rule of thumb:

If it needs a secret hiding place, it needs to be in a safe!

Now, when people think of safes, one of the first things they think of – besides “heist” movies – are the giant vaults found at banks.  Frankly, that’s not a bad place to start.  If you have a large quantity of jewelry, valuables, or important papers that you simply need to store someplace, a safe deposit box at your local bank may be the best solution.

If, on the other hand, you have prized possessions or cash that you may need to access quickly, consider purchasing a home safe.  That’s right, a good ol’ fashion, spin-the-dial or type-in-the-code armored box.  Safes are heavy, affordable, and go against everything most criminals value and hold dear – namely, the quick, easy score.

Shoplifting: Techniques

Part two in a series

I have gone deep undercover, folks!

Being in the security industry, I understand the need for communities to work together to protect each other. That’s why I put myself on the line to go into the dark world of shoplifting.

I went straight to the experts – the criminals of retail. Because, what better way do we combat the enemy than by understanding them? Itty bitty disclaimer: my life was never in danger during this journey; I never even left the office. I used the tool that these criminals use to brag about their exploits: the internet.

So, without further adieu, here are some of the little known techniques shoplifters use:

Left handing. Some shoplifters pay for some items and steal the more expensive items at the same time. One technique for this is called left handing. The shoplifter places items that he wants to pay for on the checkout stand and simply holds the high-priced item in the other hand. The item can be concealed in the other hand or in plain sight. When it is in sight, the appearance is given that it belonged to the shopper before he came into the store.

More than one shoplifter. In this scenario, a team of two is required. The team enters the store with matching bags. Team member one very obviously stuffs items into his bag in order to get the attention of Loss Prevention. Once the store is onto this team member one, he quickly and discreetly switches the bag with goods with team member two. Team member two then leaves the store with the goods and team member one has his bag searched with no incriminating evidence.

Milkshake. A shoplifter enters the store with a milkshake. Throughout the trip, she drops small goods into the milkshake. She takes care to not to sip too much and expose the product.

Keep your eye out for left-handers, bag teams, and milkshakers as shopper. Remember, these guys cost us money.

Shoplifting: Victimless crime?

I dove into the world of shoplifting to bring you some helpful tips. But, I learned much more – especially that I am paying for someone else’s crime. With so much helpful information available, I decided to provide you with a series of posts dedicated to preventing shoplifting

The National Association for Shoplifting Prevention shares that more than $35 million per day is stolen from retailers. My first post in this series covers how exactly shoplifting affects each and every one of us every day.

Retailers

  • Immediate loss of revenue from theft
  • Stores are forced to evaluate, revamp, and publicize anti-theft programs – costing $$$
  • Security measures evaluated and implemented – costing $$$

Consumers

  • The revenue loss, and increase in program and security spending are passed on to consumers
  • Since shoplifters look no different than anyone else, we all become suspect to retailers

Community

  • Once prices increase, consumers start to travel in order to beat prices.
  • Local tax dollars transfer to new area
  • Businesses can begin to close if shoplifting gets out of hand

So, now you know why you should care about shoplifting. Tune in next week when I dive into the underworld of the shoplifter to bring you inside information on the techniques they use.

• Set the lock your doors and set alarm EVERY time you leave the house
Raise your right hand and repeat after me, “I will set the alarm every time I leave the house,” and then do it. As many as 30% of all home intrusions are classified as “unlawful entries” because the criminals don’t have to force their way inside. They simply walk in through an unlocked door or window.

As great as our Monitronics home security alarm systems are, they don’t work when they’re not activated. Please, lock your doors and set your alarms!

• Have a safety plan for fire, emergency, or other natural disaster
Do your kids know what to do in case an emergency or inclement weather strikes while they’re home alone? Do you and your family know what to do in case a fire strikes in the middle of the night? The Szloseks from Palmyra, Tennessee did and thanks to their quick thinking and Monitronics monitored smoke and fire alarm system, they escaped their house in time to avoid serious injury or even death.

We at Monitronics would like to wish you a safe, healthy, and prosperous 2010 for you and your loved ones! For total protection against burglary, fire, and carbon monoxide poisoning, consider installing or upgrading your Monitronics home security system.
