Everyday Superhero: Tara Taylor

On August 27, Tara Taylor received a medical alarm from a house in Tennessee. Right away, she made a call to the home number and she had to leave a message. Next she called the paramedics—she knew someone in the house needed help.

After the emergency

Tara started calling the homeowner’s emergency contact list to try and reach someone—she was unable to reach anyone. She made one last call to the home and, luckily, the homeowner’s daughter was there. She said, “I got your message and rushed right over! He’s on the floor and can’t move. He’s numb and I think he may have had a stroke.” Tara reassured her that she had already contacted the paramedics and they were on the way.

The ambulance showed up while Tara was on the phone so she ended her call knowing that the home’s owner was in good hands.

Everyday Superhero: Kimberly Graham

On September 2, Kimberly Graham received a burglary alarm from a house in Michigan. Right away, she made a call to the home number … no answer … she had to leave a message. Next she called the home owner’s cell phone. He answered and said, “send the police, please!”

Kimberly followed the instruction and immediately called the police department. They were rolling to the home in no time.

After the emergency

Several minutes later, the police called us back. They had found a broken window and a suspect on the scene. The thief was quickly arrested and taken to jail.

Another criminal off the street, another customer’s property saved.

Everyday Superhero: Albert Talafuse

Albert Talafuse recently received a medical alarm and threw on his cape. Within seconds, he was speaking with 63 year-old Mrs. O’Neal as she pleaded, “I’ve fallen in my living room; my back and neck are hurt. Please help me!”

Albert needed to send an ambulance but he didn’t want to hang up with Mrs. O’Neal; he needed to be there for her. He recruited a fellow hero to contact the paramedics. When the ambulance showed up, they quickly rushed Mrs. O’Neal to the nearest hospital.

AFTER THE EMERGENCY

A couple days later we chatted with Mrs. O’Neal and learned that she hadn’t been feeling well the entire morning of her mishap. She had spent most of the day in bed and decided she wanted to watch TV. Just as she walked into her living room, she fell and hit her head. That’s when she pressed her medical pendant. She said:

“I’m doing much better now but I still have a big bump on my head. I’m very satisfied with the alarm response and great customer service I received. I  truly appreciate Monitronics for always being there for me when I need them.  Thank you.”

Who Do We Call When Your House is on Fire?

Your emergency contact list is so vital to your alarm monitoring. We’ll always try to call you first to tell you about any emergency at your house. Then we’ll send the right emergency responder. But, somehow we need to let you know what’s going on at home.

That’s where your emergency contact list comes into play. These are the folks and numbers that we call if we can’t reach you at your home number. They should be people you trust who live or work near your home. Some considerations for your emergency contact list:

  • Be sure that you have all numbers we should try for you; think: cell, work numbers, spouse phone numbers.
  • Trusted neighbors are a good resource. They live close and can be at your house quickly if they’re available.
  • Trusted friends
  • Family members

And, remember to always keep this contact list up-to-date. You can manage it using your MyMonitronics account at Monitronics.com.

Tuesday Tips: Reduce Costly False Alarms

As a home or business owner, you know false alarms are a hassle. They waste time and resources for you, your monitoring company and responding police officers. And today, an increasing number of cities are beginning to charge individuals for excessive false alarms.

Don’t be the home or business that cried wolf. Follow these helpful tips from Monitronics on preventing those inconvenient—and potentially expensive—false alarms:

  1. Test your system monthly. It takes just a few minutes a month to make sure your system is working correctly.
  2. Secure all doors and windows. A curtain blowing in the breeze is enough to trigger a false alarm.
  3. Travel smart. Before you leave town for summer vacation, let your alarm company know that you’ll be away from home. Create a special passcode for the housesitter in case an alarm is triggered.
  4. Rethink your contact settings. Do you prefer not to be called after accidentally tripping your alarm? Change your settings. That way, your alarm company won’t automatically call you once you disarm the system.
  5. Update your call list. If your alarm company can’t reach you, they’re much more likely to dispatch police and firefighters over what may be a false alarm.
  6. Consider a pet-immune motion detector. This will keep Fido from constantly setting off the alarm.
  7. Know your code. Memorize your passcode, and share it with everyone who is authorized to be in your house, such as the babysitter, the cleaning woman and relatives.
  8. Be prepared to call. Post Monitronics’ toll-free number (800-447-9239) in an easily-accessible place so you and your family members can quickly cancel a false alarm.
