Monitronics Participates in the Conference on Crimes Against Women

The 6th annual Conference on Crimes Against Women took place in Dallas, Texas on March 28th through 30th. Once again, Monitronics was a proud sponsor of the event which seeks to bring together all of those who may respond to crimes of female victimization and arm them with the most effective, most relevant, and most up-to-date training available to battle this worldwide epidemic. e

Advocates, law enforcement, legal and medical professionals participate by attending workshops that cover a wide variety of topics which included case studies and practical application for management of crimes related to domestic violence, sex trafficking, rape, homicide, stalking and more.

In addition to corporate sponsorship of the conference this year, Monitronics also sponsored an information booth and conference attendance for a local non-profit rape crisis center, The Turning Point. The Turning Point has been supporting survivors through crisis intervention, hospital accompaniment, counseling and legal services for over 25 years.

“Our partnership with first responders is integral to our mission of protecting people and property through the use of electronic security alarm monitoring. Supporting the Conference on Crimes Against Women is an excellent way to demonstrate our appreciation for these conference attendees,” says Barb Holliday, Monitronics Director of Dealer Services. “This year we were excited to take that support a step further by sponsoring The Turning Point, a local non-profit whose work supporting crime victims is remarkable.”

House Sitters – A Homeowner’s Secret Weapon Against Criminals

In this series of articles, we’re looking at the Bling Ring Burglars, a group of teenagers who went on a year-long crime spree, breaking into celebrities’ homes and making off with over $3 million in clothes, jewelry, money, and designer merchandise.  As devastating as their adventures were to the victims, a closer look reveals that most of the burglaries could have been prevented.

In today’s article we’re going to take a look at the only one of their home invasion attempts that was foiled and why.

How a Hollywood Celebrity Avoided Becoming a Crime Victim

Thanks to the Internet and social media sites, the Bling Ring gang was able to research when their famous victims would not be home.  The gang broke into Audrina Partridge’s home, for example, while she was at the Academy Awards, and they hit Orlando Bloom’s home while he was out of town shooting a movie.

When the gang went to the house of High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale, they had no reason to expect that this latest home invasion would be different than any of the others.  When the kids got to the home, however, they found something they weren’t expecting.  Something that made them abandon their plans and get out of the area.

What was this thing they found?

Well, it wasn’t really a thing at all.  It was a person.  Ashley Tisdale had a house sitter.

Whether the person in Tisdale’s house was an employee, a house sitter who had been hired to look after her place while she was gone, or just a friend who had been staying with Tisdale isn’t clear.  She was a human presence, and the Bling Ring gang wanted nothing to do with her.

The Advantages of Hiring a House Sitter

Aside from just the home security benefits, there are several reasons to consider hiring a house sitter.  Home owners routinely rely on house sitters to assist with the following situations:

7 Reasons Paris Hilton Is the Most Opportune Crime Target Ever!

7 Reasons Paris Hilton Is the Most Opportune Crime Target Ever!Court records released over the summer revealed that a number of Hollywood celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Orlando Bloom, secretly testified in the trials of the Bling Ring Burglars, a group of California teenagers, who were arrested for breaking into their – and several other celebrities’ — homes in California.

In case you missed the story, the Bling Ring Burglars, also known as the Hollywood Hills Burglars, committed a rash of burglaries between October 2008 and August 2009 and stole over $3 million dollars in jewelry, designer shoes, purses, clothing and other fashion accessories.  They even robbed some homes multiple times.

As the details from the Bling Ring’s year long Hollywood crime spree came to light over the past spring and summer, it became obvious that one victim stood out above the rest and may have earned the title of “The Most Opportune (We didn’t want to say, “easiest.”) Crime Target of All Time.”  Yes, we’re talking about Paris Hilton.

While it’s easy to criticize Paris for making pretty much every crime prevention mistake in the book, it’s probably fair to say that most of us have been guilty of committing one or all of these violations at some time or another.  Read about Paris’ mistakes below and follow the tips to avoid becoming a crime victim yourself.

Seven Ways Paris Hilton Made Herself an Ideal Crime Target for Criminals

  1. She fit the profile of an easy target
When Rachel Lee and Nick Prugo, the ring’s leaders were looking for their first victim, they asked themselves, “Who would be an easy target?  Who would be so careless as to leave so much jewelry and cash lying around that she wouldn’t miss it?”  They both agreed that Paris fit that profile to a tee.  They weren’t disappointed.

What message do you convey to potential criminals?  If you’re scattered, disorganized, and unaware of your surroundings – even at the local grocery store – you may be sending out signals to criminals looking for an easy target.

  2. She told the whole world that she wasn’t home
Paris frequently posts updates to her 2.6 million Twitter followers, so all the burglars just had to follow her updates to find out when she wouldn’t be home.  Granted, it’s not very hard to determine the whereabouts of a public figure such as Hilton, but she certainly made it easier for them.

Though you may not have as many followers as Paris, just keep in mind that when you write, “5 days to Vegas, Bay-beee!!!” on one of your social networking profiles, you never know who may be reading it.

  3. 3. She didn’t make arrangements for when she would be gone
This reason fits hand in hand with the previous one, but is strong enough to stand on its own.  Whether you’re broadcasting that you’re leaving town or not, make arrangements with your neighbors or a family friend to keep an eye on the house for you.  If possible, arrange for a house sitter to stay in your home while you’re away.

The first thing that the intruders did when they arrived at Paris’ front door at 2 am, was ring the doorbell.  Had lights come on or someone been there in Paris’ absence, the kids would most likely have run away – as they did at Ashley Tisdale’s house.

Even if you don’t publicize your comings and goings on your social networking pages, criminals can still get a pretty good idea of whether you’re home or not.  One celebrity who avoided being a victim was Disney star Ashley Tisdale.  The gang set out to burglarize her house, but were scared away by a friend of Ashley’s who was house-sitting in her absence.

Keep pets safe from fire hazards

We all know that children are naturally curious, which makes them both adorable and dangerous. Turns out that our pets share those same qualities. But we rarely think about protecting them from hazards in the same way as we do our two-legged babies. Recently, the NFPA said that almost 1,000 home fires are accidentally caused by the family pet each year. Here are some tips to help keep you and your furry friends safe:

  • Unplug appliances when they aren’t in use. Some pets are chewers and could cause a short in wiring, which could result in fire. It may look like a stupid pet trick, but it’s no joke that curious pets can accidently turn on hair dryers, microwaves, and even stoves.
  • Remove stove knobs or cover them when they aren’t in use. Dogs have been known to smell food, stand on hind legs to investigate, and accidently turn on burners while the homeowners are away.
  • Don’t leave appliances unattended when they are in use. Irons are a prime example—easy to pull down, dangerous if on the ground.
  • Along that same line of thinking, don’t ever leave a burning candle unattended.  This may sounds like Fire Safety 101, but it’s surprising how many people forget, only to have kitty tip it over.
  • During and after grilling, when coals are hot, use caution with dogs (and we don’t mean hot dogs). They can knock over the grill.
  • Use stainless steel or ceramic pet water bowls outdoors. A glass bowl full of water can filter sunlight and ignite wood decking or support beams.
